What is the Safe Place?

The Safe Place is an exercise which creates a place in the mind to be visited when anxious feelings start. It is a useful tool as it is a sealed off space for you alone.

How does it work?

Ideally it is an imaginary place where you can feel safe and are on your own.  The beach is a common Safe Place but it can be on top of a mountain, in a bluebell wood, by a river/stream – anywhere which helps you feel calm.  By closing your eyes and creating the Safe Place with a trigger word, for example, ‘the beach’ or ‘bluebells’, the anxious feelings can dissipate.

There are various aspects to creating the Safe Place:

– what you see and the colours and details of these things.

– what you hear, taste, smell and touch.
